Editor's Disclaimer: These are Ollie's personal recollections and views, not those of the Club - any complaints, corrections, or abuse should be addressed to him !!
On a beautiful late summers day Mike Webster lost the toss as Kingston decided to bat. The pitch appeared to be dry with not too much bounce, though perhaps a little uneven in places.
Nevertheless Barnes went about their bowling task with aplomb. Flower and Price had arrived halfway through the second over and Keith Seed even later. Consequently New Zealander Richard Bell playing in his second match, opened the bowling with his particular mixture of off and leg cutters.
From the other end Oliver Hogg began to ply his trade. In his second over he had Nick Crouch (the articulated one) caught at silly mid-wicket by the diving Matt Krevs, and the collapse had begun.
Bell induced a false stroke from Kearnes for an easy caught and bowled and Kingston were 5 – 2.
By the end of the fifteenth over a double wicket maiden and the Lefthanders had subsided to 27 – 5.
Flower replaced Bell, seemingly untarnished by his month in the sun, he bowled fast and the middle order were unable to get him away. Flower picked up a deserved wicket when Dave Connett slashed at a wide one and was caught brilliantly above his head by Bell in the slips.
Dan Hogg replacing his uncle immediately found a good line and length and with his third ball had Smith caught at short mid-wicket by Krevs. Eighteen and a half overs gone and Kingston had reached a nadir of 32 for seven.
Now Haddow was bought into the attack, thirty-four runs were creamed from his three rather awful overs while at the other end Dan rather lost his line to finish up with one for 20 from four. Keith Seed came on to bowl seven splendid overs of line and length, which the Lefthanders could only keep out. Saperia replaced Haddow, spinning the ball sharply away from the bat, and when Krevs replaced him, the end was nigh.
In his second over Krevs spun a well pitched up ball past Mayes (33) push forward. A classic leg break that pitched on leg stump and hit off, and ended a fine eighth wicket partnership of 79.
Oscroft was still there on 42, but when Oliver Hogg was bought back he lasted only two more balls, then a quicker one bowled him, three short of his fifty. Three legal balls later and the innings was over. Kingston all out for 129 (one more than they made last year at Barn Elms) and Oliver Hogg finished with six for 21.
After the slight alarm of losing Roger Price playing on, in the third over, an excellent partnership of 71 put Barnes well on top by the start of the last twenty overs. Adam Hogg (27) opening for the first time in three weeks played in resolute style, while Matt Krevs (70) took the Kingston attack apart.
When Hogg was out just into the last hour, a little trickle of wickets – Saperia (3) and Bell (0) built a little pressure on Barnes, but this was released by the arrival of Steve Flower at the wicket.
Now the familiar tones of Krevs “yip, yip, yip” pushing for quick runs could be heard. However his demise was not far away. Mayes came back to bowl out the innings, a quickish bowler with some movement, and a good line. Krevs latched onto a wide one and smote it into the covers where Oscroft took a fine catch. 114 – 5 and Dan Hogg came to the wicket. Mayes did not cut his pace for the thirteen-year-old, who tucked him round the corner in true left hander’s style to get off the mark.
Three overs later Dan was bowled by a very slow ball from Smith, and Keith Seed came out to finish the job. Seed carefully steered away a couple of singles, giving the strike to Flower, who finished the job with three successive fours. Barnes won by four wickets.
