Editor's Disclaimer: These are Ollie's personal recollections and views, not those of the Club - any complaints, corrections, or abuse should be addressed to him !!
A lovely sunny September morning saw eleven Barnes Occasionals attempting to reach the far off outpost of Westcott down the A24 and west of Dorking. By some miracle all members eventually arrived and though Price was half an hour late, the unsuitably clad but more than capable Dan Hogg covered his place in the field.
To add to the miracles of the day, Barnes sported an audience of some fourteen members and their dog. As if to celebrate this fact, they ran out easy winners - by five wickets - with an unbeaten 50 for the skipper and records a plenty.
Matt Krevs won the toss and decided to insert the opposition. Flower wound up the pace gradually, but Oliver Hogg quickly slotted into his rhythm. Needing three wickets to pass the club record (Keith Seed’s 44 in 1998) his dream became a reality with the first ball of the tenth over. Then, with the field pushed back Timpson launched a booming on drive straight down the throat of Adam Hogg, for his 100th catch, all time.
Numbers two, three and four had been removed by a dolly at gully for Mundy, a sharp chance almost over Krevs’ head at silly mid-on and a shapely ball that severely disturbed Dixon’s stumps, from Flower.
Initially Krevs went for the throat. Seed (1-10) replaced Flower who alternately replaced Hogg. On fifteen overs Westcott were reduced to 48-5. Seed sorted out Stevens, pushing the field round and cleverly bowling to his plan, in order to finally bowl the young man behind his legs for 11. Shrives and Llewellyn added 36 for the sixth wicket before Mundy bowled the taller man off his pads for 10. In the same over Mundy (2-14) had a second wicket as M.Weill was caught behind. Now Westcott were 84-7.
Three overs later a sharp run was incomplete and costly as Moore, nine inches short of his ground was run out, by one of those Flower specials - fast and flat and the bails removed by the bowler (?) Roger Price. Westcott were 94-8. All the while Tom Shrives was moving serenely through the forties. When the eighth wicket fell he was 42 and now he and Connor Weill (at number ten) put on 50 for the ninth.
Matt Krevs went through all his bowlers looking for the final breakthrough. Lawrence, Mundy, Adam Hogg, Price, Webster (who had Shrives dropped at mid-off by O.J. Hogg) Krevs himself, and the customary two overs of total dross from Ian Haddow.
At 134, Oliver Hogg (4-24) was summoned back into the attack. In his third over back he finally had Weill caught behind - fishing at a wide one. Flower (2-24) finished it off in the following over finally bowling Shrives for a well made 77.
Barnes set off in the chase for 147, with Price in what appeared to be prime form. However true to his recent levels (averaging eleven since the last time he passed 25 on 1st July) he departed from the middle bowled by a little bit of movement and gone for twelve in the third over.
Webster (5) came out to join Adam Hogg (13), and a period of re-establishment followed. Half an hour later, in two overs both those two were out and Barnes were on the back foot again at 41-3.
Lawrence joined Krevs in the middle and the fight back was under way. The fast bowlers began to suffer as Krevs opened his shoulders, while Lawrence scratched around a bit.
They added 56 in 42 minutes and the target suddenly seemed not so far away.
Westcott’s change bowlers were a leg-spinner and a young medium pacer who bowled Lawrence in his second over. One over later Mundy was out for nought (99-5), attempting to hit the spinner behind square he was caught off a top edge at square leg.
Those familiar (Barnes Occasionals in trouble) tremors began again, but now came Steve Flower (26 not out) with the Ultimate Destroyer and with the skipper in tow he breezed through another fifty partnership to finish the match in fine style with a big four through mid on.
Matt Krevs finished 56 not out with a wonderful captain’s knock and Barnes had won six matches in a row for the first time ever.
