Match Report: (By O Hogg - not M Lawrence)
Kingston Lefthanders won the toss and chose to bat following their
historic win last season.
Skipper Lawrence opened the bowling with Hogg O. and Mundy who struggled
to make the initial breakthrough on a greasy surface. A mix up
between the openers Crouch and Oldman resulted in the "articulated"
Crouch failing to turn and make good his ground in time to beat the
throw from the deep from young Rob Matthews - friend to John Hanmer.
Following a twenty minute shower, Kingston's number three bat battered
Mundy out of the attack and began to accustom himself to driving at
Hogg, who he lifted over wide mid on for four.
From the Road End Hogg began to swing the ball, sometimes
extravagantly. Soon he swung one through Oldman's gate. Cozens
came in and carried the attack to Matthews briskish medium pace, till
Nigel Pettitt pulled off an excellent catch to a wide ball from Hogg
that rapidly dropped just in front of gully. Pettitt plucked it from
just above the deck and the rot to set in. Matthews picked up two
wickets one caught at backward point the other a skier at mid off as the
"Lefthanders" lost their heads and their wickets.
Hogg had bowled his first ten overs for seven runs and just one wicket,
but the rain break made it seemingly impossible for the bowlers to keep
their feet and his last four overs disappeared for 30, however he did
chip in with a third wicket, that of the inexplicably promoted number
eleven, batting at five!
Pettitt replaced Hogg and soon had a couple of wickets for himself,
while Dan Hogg replacing Matthews at the pavilion end applied the
coup-de-gras with an lbw to remove the perfectly useless Lake.
Kingston declared at tea on 128-9.
After three quick wickets Price, John Hanmer and Pettitt falling for the
addition of 41 runs Adam Hogg and Martin Lawrence scrubbed off the
difference of 88 for no further loss. Hogg was dropped by Lake at mid
off when seven, but he finished 54 not out.
Lawrence having been instructed by the scorers that he needed four to
win but six for his fifty declined the more sensible method of a two
followed by a four, and chose to hit the first ball of the 32nd over for
six - unfortunately the ball bounced about a foot short of the wide mid
on boundary and Lawrence finished 48 not out.
Barnes won by seven wickets, with loads of overs to spare.
