Match Report:

Toss 2.40pm Lichfield won toss and decided to field

After some initial good luck with the early demise of Philpot in a surprise run-out and the unexpected early wicket of RAFA Captain Cook, unbelievably caught behind by "The Elegant Bob" off the pace bowling of Dunlop, the shortage of bowlers (due to Hogg O's injury) began to tell upon the Occasionals.

The rotund Australian, Smith, who initially looked a little out of touch, managed to remain at the crease for some time putting on a respectable 42 before he finally holed out to Price off the bowling of Flower (who protested his ability to bowl uphill for "as long as you like" - as long as you like wides and long hops).   In the meantime, Kasim, sporting an out of date "Surrey Youth" cap - looked well in touch,  particularly with his uncle Siddiqi, who was umpiring at the time that he edged a ball  to the keeper, and was given not out. Siddiqi claimed not to have heard the edge, but was soon removed by his captain (who told the batsman, during drinks, that "people in flats across the road would have heard that one").

Fortunately for the Occaisonals, the rest of the RAFA team never really got going, and apart from a final flurry in the last few overs, did not score as quickly as is customary for this fixture.

Lichfield opened the reply with Hanmer, who despite his protests, put on a few quick runs in the first two overs before being deceived playing a defensive shot to a full toss from Partleton.  The other opener was Webster, who was notably run out by Dunlop.   Notably, because he was run out by Kasim.  Even more notably, because a few balls before, Kasim had thrown in from the boundary for a direct hit on the stumps, and Dunlop should have known better than to call Webster for a single after hitting the ball directly to Kassim.

Towards the end of the match, with about 5 overs to go, the asking rate was 7 per over, and during this period, two batsmen are worthy of consideration, for their similar scores, and for their contrasting attitudes towards team games.

The first is Mundy, who sporting a new bat, managed to first score double figures for the first time in the season, and then moved on to 38 before being caught off the bowling of Siddiqi (obeying orders to speed up the scoring at the end of the innings).

The other is Dunlop, who made an impressive 43 not out, but who decided that he would defy the captain's orders to try and hit out to win the match, despite there being only a few overs to go, with 5 wickets in hand.  During one of the last overs, he even played out a maiden.

When Mundy was out, and needing something approaching 15 an over, Lichfield sent out Flower who managed 4 (hitting to orders), and Hogg O, who also was out for 0 (obeying orders), before Lichfield himself played out the last two balls for 0, to draw a match which the Occasionals had had every chance of winning.
