Match Report:

The Date: 2nd May

The Time: 2.30 p.m.

The Place: Some godforsaken municipal cricket pitch in the middle of South London’s grim suburban belt with a boundary on one side the length of three football pitches

The Weather: Surprisingly nice

The Teams: The Mighty Barnes Occasionals v The Open University (Post coup d’etat, but still with more than a smattering of Hunters)

The Captain: Adam Hogg

The Toss: Lost. BOCC to field first.

The Report: "We’ll bat against this lot if I win." stated the captain in the dressing room.

Several quizzical eyebrows were raised at this potentially eccentric statement, while the ubiquitous Haddow chimed in with "Cor, vere’s facking confidenz fore yer" or some such witticism.

However, the toss was made with batting in mind, but wrongly called.

In the field, Hogg elected to open the bowling with his brother, and Dunlop. So to the first ball of the match, bowled by O. Hogg, which was a palpable long hop, wide on the off side. The Batsman (Hunter) shaped up to mash the leather to the boundary, only succeeding in fairly gently spooning it up straight into Mundy’s hands at cover. One down for no runs ("All over in a minute", "time to bring on the comedians" were two of the comments aimed at the captain at this juncture).

This wicket brought in the number three batsman (Hunter most senior) who scored an ugly and unconventional six runs before being caught by Lichfield, again off O. Hogg’s bowling. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, until the fifth wicket partnership held BOCC up, with the OU’s opener Rooney going well. As the score at this stage was paltry, Hogg decided to take the early advice and bring on some gentler bowling, which resulted in Haddow being smote for 22 runs off his three overs, and Tagg for 20 off his four, with no further batsmen falling. In the quest for wickets, Hogg turned to Mundy and then Lawrence in quick succession who between them skittled the tail over in nine overs (including another two Hunters), with Lawrence taking an extremely creditable 4 wickets for 10 runs, bowling his revised leg spin which seemed to work for the first time ever in a competitive situation. Mid-way through the innings Hogg suggested to anyone who cared to listen that 100-110 would be a good target to chase. However, as the number nine and ten batsmen amassed 20 runs between them, the target became slightly larger then intended and the OU wrapped up their innings at 117 all out after 29.5 overs.

So to the BOCC Innings.

The Captain faced the first ball with Webster as his partner, and between them 31 runs were put on at a stultifyingly slow pace. In fact the only noise heard from the serried ranks on the boundary was that of the "slow bat-knock", except when to the sound of malevolent laughter, Hogg majestically edged two balls between slip and keeper for four runs apiece. Fortunately for the spectators, Hogg was out first, taking about an hour over his 14 runs. Now came the turn of Seed, who had been told by the captain that he wouldn’t get a bowl, but would bat at three (much to the chagrin of certain other players, fully expecting an archtypical "dead-bat-Seed" innings. The captain proved to be right for once as Seed set about the bowling with gay (or should I say leather-clad pooftah) abandon. Eventually, Seed fell, not grounding his bat when comfortably set to complete the run.

This soft dismissal put Barnes on the back foot, with Dunlop, Saperia, Lichfield and Mundy all failing dismally by their elevated standards. The captain then put in Lawrence, who he fully expected to fail, given his prowess with the ball. Lawrence proceeded to startle most of the assembled gentleman with a quick fire innings.

It has since been reported to the captain that when Barnes need five off the last ball of the innings, Lawrence surveyed the scene, ignored the three hundred yard boundary on the on side and said to his partner, O Hogg, that he could hit the bowler for six straight back over his head. Lawrence was clean bowled for seventeen.

Barnes finished on 113 for 8 off 40 overs.
